A peaceful anti-racism march in Montreal was followed by 11 arrests during clashes with police, and the shattered windows of Steve’s Music Store led to a guitar free-for-all. Meanwhile, a rally in Vancouver transpired in support of Black Lives Matter, although the movement itself expressed concern about the need for distancing.
Trinity Bellwoods Park circles kept the crowds away. A tranquil scene came over the Toronto park, where vigilant bylaw officers scared off hipster flirting. Defiance of Ontario’s emergency act moved up north, to the Minden 50’s Diner, where owner Jason Lake was serving spaced-out sit-down breakfast customers until cops turned up.
Monkman’s happy customer
Reaction to his latest painting, Hanky Panky, led the artist to issue an apology for how it portrayed Indigenous women laughing at Justin Trudeau on his knees with his pants down. The controversy also drew the attention of a previous Kent Monkman art buyer. Toronto employment lawyer Howard Levitt considers it to be a good investment:
