Waterloo Region has become the battlefield for a war on Halloween after the public school board sent a directive to educators to avoid classroom celebrations. But the board issued the same directive last year with cultural sensitivities in mind, noting costumed kids won’t be reprimanded. But one columnist is fine with it being banned.

Martha Henry dead at 83. A mainstay of the Stratford Festival since 1962, she was born in Detroit and moved to Montreal to attend the National Theatre School. At age 80, she played Prospero in The Tempest. Henry’s final role, in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, was delayed a year, and its run ended just 12 days before she died.
